Enhanced Text-to-Speech

Read&Write 10 GOLD’s text-to-speech features offer a simple and accurate way to read any text. Users can listen to text being read aloud in MS Word documents, emails, web pages or PDF documents with word highlighting to help with word recognition. New UK voices now available include Sangeeta and Serena.

Read&Write 10 also comes with Australian RealSpeak Solo voices as standard while remaining compatible with Microsoft SAPI 4 and 5 speech technology.

Read&Write GOLD comes with RealSpeak Solo voices – which give a more realistic sounding human voice and load in a fraction of the time taken by previous voices. Australian RealSpeak SAPI5 voices are available with Texthelp Read&Write programs from March 2005!

Scanning

Large books or manuals can be a hurdle for those with dyslexia. In the workplace, paperwork presents many challenges for employees with reading difficulties. Read&Write 10 GOLD’s scanning is powered by ABBYY FineReader‘s Optical Character Recognition, a tool that ensures that books and reports are accurately scanned into MS Word, PDF or HTML. The digital text can then be read aloud, saved as an audio file or manipulated as required.

PDF Aloud

Read&Write 10 GOLD has a built-in tool to assist employees when reading PDF documents from Adobe. ‘Click and Speak’ allows you to click on the exact part of the text you wish to read. If you are reading a PDF document from your intranet or from a website, simply select the ‘hover’ option and move the mouse over the text.

Pronunciation Tutor

This on-screen tutor helps you visually see how words, including their syllables, are pronounced. The Pronunciation Tutor can be particularly helpful to English Language Learners as it helps in the development of more accurate speech.

Enhanced Sounds Like and Confusable Words

This feature identifies words that sound the same but are spelt differently, such as ‘dear’ and ‘deer’ or words that are commonly confused, such as ‘through’ and ‘thorough’. The ‘Sounds Like’ feature lists possible alternatives with audible definitions and sample sentences to make proof reading easier.

The Word Wizard provides new or alternative words as well as information about your word and the definitions can all be read aloud. For example, if you search for “bicycle”, you can choose “parts of a bicycle” and the results will include bicycle parts such as “seat”, “wheel”, “inner tube”, etc. This feature increases vocabulary, understanding, and efficiency.

Speech Input

Speech Input converts speech into digital text. You simply dictate into a microphone connected to your computer to easily create documents. This is especially useful for those who have difficulties with typing.

Speak while Typing

Speak while Typing allows you to hear each word read aloud as you type. You can also choose to read aloud the entire document when finished. By listening to your work being read aloud, you can correct and self-edit your work before submitting it, thereby reducing many common errors.

Fact Finder

The Fact Finder is a web search tool that makes finding information on the internet easier and faster. Read&Write GOLD then displays the online search results for your word so you can continue your research. It is a quick and easy way of conducting research and gathering information for reports.

Enhanced Fact Folder

Read&Write 10 GOLD’s Fact Folder will help employees to collate key facts from websites and other applications. Simply select the text you wish to save and click on the Fact Folder. The date and website address will automatically be saved for you. You can then view a report of all your research with an academic bibliography. All formatting issues are removed as the software will format the Word document for you.

New Vocabulary Tool

Talking Calculator

You can access a simple or scientific talking calculator from within Read&Write GOLD! In addition to maths calculations, you can use the calculator for conversions, such as length, mass, velocity, time, temperature and volume. You can even calculate equations within a document.

The Teacher’s Toolkit allows teachers to control which features to add or delete from the Read&Write GOLD toolbar, configure students’ settings, monitor the progress of students, collate spelling error logs, and analyse usage patterns. Read&Write Web You can use the Read&Write Web toolbar to access and interact with web content on your mobile device or computer. It will read HTML content aloud with dual colour highlighting. You can also use the following support tools: Dictionary and Picture Dictionary to look up unfamiliar words; Translator to translate selected words into French; Study Skills to highlight and extract important pieces of information and Fact Finder to research on the web. You also have control over the speed of the reading voice.

eBook Reader eBook Reader allows you to log into your Bookshare account, download or open a Bookshare eBook, and read the ebook aloud with dual colour highlighting, with access to all of the same support tools found in Read&Write Web.

Speech Designed to be used on smaller devices like your smartphone, you can use this App to read aloud any typed or pasted text with dual colour highlighting. Perfect for texting!

Dictionary Another App meant for smaller devices, the Dictionary App lets you look up words, get both text definitions and images, and read aloud the text definitions.
