Book Summary

Against All the Odds: George Washington and the Fight for American Independence by John Bergez

Just about everyone has heard of George Washington, but few people know very much about him. Who was this man who commanded the American army during the war for independence and later became America’s first President? What was he really like? How did he become the one indispensable figure in the birth of the United States? And how could Washington fight for ‘liberty’ when he himself owned slaves?

This book reveals the little-known Washington through the recollections of three people who knew him. Moses is a slave who knew Washington from boyhood to old age. John Adams is the fiery revolutionary who nominated Washington as commander in chief of the American army. And the Marquis de Lafayette is the youthful Frenchman who fought by Washington’s side and called Washington my “father and general”.

The stories told by these narrators reveal Washington’s struggles, doubts, and fears as well as his enormous achievements. In this book, readers will discover a living, breathing human being and how he grew into the mythic figure Americans call the Father of His Country.
