Softpics with Fantastic Pics brings the world of communication to the fingertips of people with severe communication impairment. The collection of over 3000 images can be used in Boardmaker or Writing with Symbols 2000 (using the JPEG version) and Microsoft platforms, eg: Word and PowerPoint. You can either get the Complete Professional Package which includes the image library and the tools to design and lay out your own display boards directly, or you can get just the Images library which has pictures only.

These images were developed by Ylana Bloom, an Australian Speech Pathologist with many years experience in the communication field and in management of challenging behaviours. The images have been specifically designed to meet the needs of people with intellectual disabilities – those people who find the PCS symbols which come with Boardmaker too abstract to understand.
You can purchase the 3000 images on their own and use them with Boardmaker or within Writing with Symbols 2000. To use them in Boardmaker, you simply need to cut and paste them into your Boardmaker grids. To have them automatically appear in the Australian version of Writing with Symbols 2000, you need to create a “wordlist” using the Resource Manager supplied with Writing with Symbols 2000. Note: Softpics/Fantastic Pics images are not supplied with Boardmaker or Writing with Symbols 2000 – you need to purchase these separately.
The Softpics team are always looking for suggestions for new images. They will draw them up and send them to you free of charge if you own a copy of Softpics. They will also add the images you have suggested to the free updates to which all Softpics owners are entitled for the first twelve months after purchase.
There are three different versions of Softpics Tools included on the Softpics Complete Package CD-ROM. On installation, you can choose the version which best suits your computer system. This has been designed to ensure compatibility with both older and newer computers.
- Softpics Standard
Softpics Standard Edition has been designed for people with older computers that support 800×600 16 bit colour display. Features a variety of editing and display creating tools.
- Softpics LT
Softpics LT Edition has been designed for those people with video display adapters that have architecture that has difficulty supporting Softpics 2.04. It has the same functionality as the Standard edition.
- Softpics Professional
Softpics Professional Edition includes most of the tools in Softpics Standard and has substantial additional features.

Windows XP, Vista and 7 Compatibility
- Softpics tools can be used on Windows XP; in order to run Softpics tools on Windows XP you need to set the display resolution to 800 by 600. If you don’t like to work in the 800 × 600 resolution or if you have Vista or Windows 7, you can use the Softpics/Fantastic Pics images only, with third party tools and applications such as Boardmaker, Writing with Symbols 2000, MS Word, Powerpoint, Publisher, etc.
