The Plug-In Scan Module converts a keyboard-model Lightwriter to one with scanning access. It has been designed for users with progressive conditions who become unable to continue using the keyboard. It plugs into the Lightwriter and allows scanning access with 1 or 2 switches.

Scanning is a selection technique for people who cannot use a keyboard. The alphabet is displayed on a screen on which a cursor moves automatically from letter to letter. When the cursor reaches the desired letter, the user activates a switch to select that letter.

The Plug-In Scan Module has high intensity backlit displays to cater for vision impairment, and also has a text display to show the sentence being spelled.

The Plug-In Scan Module provides the advantages of allowing the scanning display to be positioned properly for the user to see it for making scanning selections while the Lightwriter can be positioned for easy viewing by the listener(s), or for the caregiver to use the keyboard for setup. Until the Plug-In Scan module is needed, the Lightwriter remains very compact and portable.

Being fully self-contained with its own battery supply, the Plug-In Scan Module can be positioned on a wheelchair mounting system, attached to a floor-stand or an overbed bracket, or simply placed on a table or wheelchair tray.

The Scan Module is compatible with Lightwriter SL35, SL35/Cherry, SL35/BigKeys, SL38, SL56 units.
