Polyana 4 is an “off-the-shelf” handheld PC that has been modified to perform as a functional voice output communication device. It runs Persona, a program which enables typed text to be spoken out loud, together with a phrase bank (chat box) for quick retrieval of whole messages. With DECtalk speaking the messages through the modified and improved speakers, the volume is loud and clear.

Printing to standard full-size PC printers can be achieved through the USB, infra-red or Bluetooth connection – ideal for secondary or tertiary students.

Persona AAC Software

Persona is a text-based communication program specifically for literate users who need to talk, yet have other computer requirements – like writing and printing long documents. Access to the program is by the keyboard, the touch screen and by switches through the on-screen keyboard. Input speed is increased and enhanced with word completion, word prediction, abbreviation/expansion, phrase retrieval and DECtalk speech synthesis.

Persona Word Prediction

The word prediction LEARNS your words and predicts them according to your word patterns and usage. This is very effective for speed enhancement especially when scanning. The default font is yellow on a blue background, however font and background colour and size can be changed to suit individual preferences. This is how the program appears when text is typed using the keyboard.

Scanning and Switch Access

Persona software, specific to this unit, also offers a scanning array which permits a person using a single switch to access the stored messages or chat box to convert text to DECtalk speech. Various scanning arrays may be selected, for example, alphabetical, optimised (frequency of Use) or QWERTY. Alternatively a scan array can be customised. The switch jack is built right into the rear of the Polyana 4 unit.

The Polyana 4 is available in two versions:

• Polyana 4 Standard

  This version is supplied with mainstream Pocket PC (or PC Companion) software installed, for example: MS Wordpad, SpreadCE, Pocket On-Schedule, Media Player, calculator and various Microsoft viewers, Word, Excel, PDF, Image, PowerPoint, etc.

  Note: There are limitations to direct printing from the Polyana. Printing from Persona is limited by the printer drivers Persona uses. Persona includes drivers for the Extech portable printer, the Sipix A6 printer and the Canon BJC-85. These are all infra-red printers that use the IR port to transfer data to the printer. If printing from the other pre-installed programs, the operating system offers compatibility with PCL (printer control [or command] language) printers. The easiest way to print documents generated on the Polyana is to transfer the document to a USB memory stick or a compact flash card, then print it on a regular computer with a printer attached.

• Polyana 4 Dedicated

  The Dedicated version is a dedicated Speech Generating Device that meets the requirements of various medical assistance agencies and access to the Windows CE programs is denied.

Caution: The Polyana 4 is not suitable for people or situations where it may be dropped or receive very “rough” use.
