Carol Gray’s methods of creating a “Social Story” have become a widely recognised way of teaching social and life skills to children with autism and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Each story is created according to specific criteria based on the learning characteristics of children with ASD. Both My Social Stories Book and The New Social Story Book offer specific guidelines for successfully creating individualised social stories following this criteria.
Social Stories take children step-by-step through basic activities such as brushing your teeth, taking a bath and wearing a safety belt in the car. The stories provided in these two books are very simple and are accompanied by one or more line drawings to illustrate key points. They do not incorporate picture symbols, but could possibly be adapted to use them.
My Social Stories Book is attractively illustrated and containing over 150 social stories. The helpful introduction explains how to get the most out of the book and offers guidelines for producing individualised social stories.
