BETT Gold Award winning software that explores and nurtures students' musical talents

Most children have a natural enthusiasm for music, but many find it hard to play a real instrument. Award-winning MusicBox 2 was designed to let them explore and make music on a computer without knowing anything about notation. It’s just like painting on the screen, except that instead of creating a visual work of art, your students will in no time at all be exploring sounds, pitch, rhythm, and composition.

Music can be difficult to teach for some teachers. If you’re not a confident musician it can be difficult to get things going, and even if you are, you need to incorporate Information and Communication Technologies. Music Box 2 tackles these frustrations head-on, while encouraging students to THINK, create and explore…

Four easy-to-use self-contained activities encourage students to explore sounds, chords and percussion, and to create single- or multi-part compositions. Over 200 instruments (grouped in categories such as percussion, brass, strings and keyboard) can be used.

  • In SOUND BOX, they play with pitch and the way different instruments sound. Seven instruments are available at a time, but fewer if you use ‘rests’.
  • CHORD BOX gets students experimenting with two to seven note-chords for sing- or play-along accompaniments. The easy-to-use chord sequencer even names recognisable chords!
  • In BEAT BOX they explore percussion patterns, pulse and rhythm in real-time by placing instruments on a time line.
  • TUNE BOX pulls all these ideas together, challenging students to create single or multi-part compositions. They can swap instruments to see how different their tunes sound, and save favourites to play to friends!

MusicBox’s flexible ‘Options’ make classroom management easy, allowing you to tailor the program to suit individuals or groups on stand-alone or networked machines. Along with the software, the CD includes curriculum guidance, 10 worksheets, a Handbook and the MusicBox 2 in the Classroom book.

MusicBox 2 is the definitive pre-notation music software in thousands of schools in the UK. The enjoyment and learning young musicians get from it is limited only by imagination.

“We do love using Music Box 2. I’m a totally untrained musician with few skills and I can get our boys to use it successfully. They love it too. I’ll await the music hitting Top of the Pops!” – Woodstock Special School, UK.

“The main aim of MusicBox 2 is to allow children to be musically creative without being disadvantaged by a lack of specific musical knowledge. It is a first-rate resource that meets this aim and is both enjoyable and straightforward to use.” – Music Teacher Magazine

“This terrific software makes it possible to explore, compose and perform music without any traditional instruments. Once they have grasped the basic structure, children can quickly get to grips with the excellent on-screen tools and can make some amazing combinations of sounds, rhythms and harmonies.” – PIN (Parents Information Network)

“MusicBox 2 (Topologika) and Music Explorer (RM) are two good composing packages for children, and both can be used with children as young as Key Stage 1. But which is better? Personally, I’d definitely go for MusicBox 2.” – Sir Robert Hitcham’s Primary School, UK
