Clicker Phonics: Alphabet Animals cover

Alphabet Animals is the fourth program in the Clicker Phonics series and the second part of the Get Set! stage. In the Get Set stage of the Clicker Phonics series, children tune into the sounds of language, learning to focus on patterns in words and differentiating between their sounds. This builds on the skills they have learned in the Get Ready stage and lays the foundation for systematic phonic work in the Let’s Go stage. Hearing rhyme and alliteration in and between words encourages children to pay attention to detail, increasing their sensitivity to sounds in words.

In Alphabet Animals, children

  • increase their awareness of sounds, letters and words
  • meet fun animal characters, each with characteristics, skills and possessions based on alliteration

A variety of activities which appeal to students’ sense of enjoyment as they learn to recognise initial phonemes, including matching, writing alliterative lists, listening to alliterative sentences and recording their own versions.

In addition to the Animal book, which provides an initial stimulus and introduction to simple alliteration, Alphabet Animals includes the following activities:

Picture alphabet
Alphabet A. Click to see larger image.
In this activity children look at and select pictures of objects beginning with each letter of the alphabet. This encourages them to become familiar with the alphabet and to recognise objects that start with each letter sound.
Presents
A present. Click to see larger image.
This activity develops the ability to distinguish between different initial sounds in words by getting children to match presents to animal characters with the same initial sound.
Shopping

This activity develops the ability to distinguish between different initial sounds in words by getting children to match food items to animal characters with the same initial sound.
Who can?
A koala, a deer, an ant, a ferret and a dolphin. Click to see larger image.
On each activity page children answer the question ‘Who can…?’ by matching a verb to a name with the same initial sound. They also write simple sentences.
Who is?

On each activity page children answer the question ‘Who is…?’ by matching an adjective to a name with the same initial sound. They also write simple sentences.
Talk about
An animal. Click to see larger image.
Children are given the opportunity to make their own talking book. They record themselves taking about the animals using alliterative phrases and sentences, enabling them to practise and demonstrate articulation and understanding of alliterative sounds.
Friends
Pick words starting with 'A'. Click to see larger image.
The objective of this activity is to help children recognise the capital form of each letter in the alphabet and to distinguish between the initial sounds of names. Children match each named animal with friends who have the same initial sound and letter; they can also add and record their own list of names.
Sentences
Writing stroke for lower case 'k'. Click to see larger image.
In this activity children are supported by Clicker writing grids as they create simple alliterative sentences about the animal characters.

Additional Activities

The additional activities give children further opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the alphabet. In Alphabet book, children create a picture dictionary by selecting words that begin with each letter of the alphabet. In Letters, children practise lower-case letter formation.
