Calculator Skills for All Kids Book 1
by KLIK Enterprises
Addition and Subtraction from 0 to 100
Developed by a special education teacher, this program teaches the numeral and function keys on a calculator and how to use a calculator for addition and subtraction with one- and two-digit numbers. The worksheets can be used with students of all ages who are learning to use a calculator, including primary and secondary students with intellectual disabilities or autism, in special education, integrated or inclusive mainstream settings.
This book can be used to meet the following needs:
- In peer-tutoring programs when the tutor needs to be told exactly what to do
- For relief staff who need to be told what to do!
- For parents who want their child to have homework every night and they need to know exactly what to do and we don’t want to have to write instructions every night in the student’s communication book
- With less able students who will not use a calculator independently but want to be included and have a calculator too! These students learn numeral recognition by pressing numeral keys when asked!
Each lesson includes previously learnt material and new material is introduced gradually, ensuring student success and motivation. The fully scripted lessons allow class teachers, relief teachers, teacher assistants, volunteers, parent helpers and peer tutors to present the lessons with little or no prior training.
The lesson format is suitable for one-to-one or small group instruction. The oral presentation means:
- Non-readers and poor readers can participate
- Students’ auditory memory is strengthened
- Students must apply place value correctly (eg fourteen is keyed in as ‘first the one, then the four’, which is not what is heard)
- Students cannot key in a given problem without understanding the operation to be used, which may happen if students simply copy and key in the numerals and operation signs written on a worksheet.
The book contains:
- Blackline masters for 80 lessons;
- Baseline tests to identify the entry point for students with different levels of prior learning
- Links to outcomes based mathematics curriculum and goals for Individual Education Plans (IEPs)
- Recording sheets to monitor student achievement in mathematics and for use in student portfolios.
