What is IntelliKeys USB?
IntelliKeys USB is a programmable alternative keyboard that plugs into the USB port of your Macintosh or Windows computer. It enables students with physical, visual or cognitive disabilities, who has difficulty using a standard keyboard, to easily type, enter numbers, navigate onscreen displays and execute menu commands.
In combination with its many overlays, it is the most flexible alternative keyboard available, providing individualised support for young students, struggling learners, and English as a Secondary Language (ESL/ELL) students.
IntelliKeys USB has no keys! Teachers simply slide overlays over its programmable surface to create keyboards for different students and curriculum areas. The universal design of the overlays provides large, well-spaced keys in high contrast colours to help students locate letters, numbers, words, and directional arrows. Concepts are broken down into manageable components, with streamlined choices, fewer concepts at a time, pictures to support learning – even student photographs for personalisation.
Standard Overlays
The durable overlays included with IntelliKeys USB allow students to work with writing, math, and drawing programs; the Internet; and email:
- Mouse Access USB Overlay
The Mouse Access USB Overlay can be used to operate programs that are accessed with a mouse. It has large keys, all mouse actions, and is accessible for both right- and left-handed users.

The Math Access USB Overlay can be used with maths-related software programs, or to operate onscreen calculators, or enter data into spreadsheets. Standard numeric keypad keys are combined with keys useful for spreadsheet applications.

The QWERTY/Web USB Overlay is designed to replicate a standard computer keyboard. It contains most keys found on standard
keyboards, plus special keys such as Mouse Control Keys. The high contrast keys are very legible.

The Basic Writing USB Overlay is a simplified QWERTY keyboard for the beginning keyboard user. It includes keys most commonly used on a standard keyboard. Mouse Control Keys (upper right corner) replicate actions performed with a handheld mouse.

The Alphabet USB Overlay is designed as the first overlay a student uses. Since most children are familiar with alphabetical order, the keyboard layout is arranged from A-Z. This overlay has large keys, a student-friendly font and keyboard arrows that move a cursor in word processing programs. And … all in lower case letters at last!

The Setup USB Overlay is used to set user preferences, perform troubleshooting, and do testing. It replicates most of the features and options found on the IntelliKeys USB onscreen control panel.

Customised Overlays
Custom overlays can be created with Overlay Maker 3. With this program, you can design your own overlays in minutes and print them out on to paper. You can add or delete keys, or add text or graphics to keys. Overlay Maker 3 lets you:
- Focus cognitive attention by reducing input choices
- Group keys by colour or location
- Add graphics to support comprehension, especially for non-readers
- Increase visual contrast by changing the key size and colour
- Motivate students to progress from scanning with switches to providing varied direct-select choices
- Assess range of motion and cognitive capabilities.
Overlays from IntelliTools and Third-Party Publishers
Pre-made Popular Software Overlays (available separately) provide access to programs such as Inspiration, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, AOL Instant Messenger, Apple iTunes and Safari, Kurzweil 3000, WYNN, etc.
Pre-designed IntelliKeys USB overlays are now included with many products from companies such as SoftTouch, Attainment, Houghton Mifflin, and Laureate Learning.
Personalised Touch Control Features
As critical as appearance, touch control can also be customised by the user, with easy-to-use setup options. IntelliKeys’ sophisticated “under the hood” programming enables teachers to customise each keyboard by selecting:
- How quickly each key responds to touch
- How quickly each key repeats (fast to slow)
- Whether the repeat feature is on or off
- How quickly the mouse moves
- Whether to latch the shift and control keys for one-finger typists
- Whether the student must lift off before another key press is recognised
- Smart typing, such as punctuation spacing and “q” automatically followed by “u”
Customisable Switch Interface Device
IntelliKeys is a convenient and flexible switch interface that works with a wide variety of switch accessible software. Key features include:
- Compatible with AbleNet switches – cabled Jelly Bean switches and wireless Jelly Beamer switches
- Overlay Maker 3 can be used to program words or phrases for the switches connected to IntelliKeys
- Two switch jacks (switches sold separately)
- Facilitates transition from switch scanning access to direct-select access
Support for Problem Areas
- Range of motion
- Fine motor skills
- Low vision
- Multiple cognitive demands
- Learning disabilities
- The QWERTY keyboard
In an inclusion classroom, IntelliKeys USB helps special needs students feel part of the group. Its alphabetical overlay supports young students until they are ready for the QWERTY keyboard. Picture overlays help struggling readers catch up. And overlays in another language help ELL/ESL students acquire new English vocabulary.
