Camera

The camera is easy to hold in little hands, and operation is simple: You hold down the button and record away. There is an LCD screen that indicates how many scenes were created, and gives some indication of how much space is left. The camera has a timer mode, so you can start the recording on a delay – which gives the camera operator the chance to step into shots. It can store up to 8 minutes of video that can be downloaded to a PC using the included cradle connected to the computer through a USB port. Aside from video, the camera can shoot still photographs and record sound using a built-in microphone.

Software

On the software side, Digital Movie Creator is a real blast. Every button and mouse click results in some kind of tactile feedback with sound, so you’ll always know your clicks are productive. Getting the footage you shot into the computer is a snap – one click, actually – and the software ships with a myriad of stock footage to spice up your films.

You can quickly add text, sound effects, transitions, even music using the drag-and-drop interface. The software is simple. There’s no need to learn time codes (or even know what they are) and no complicated menus – everything is drag and drop. When you’re all done with your creation, you can view it in the Movie Creator Theatre, complete with a big screen and heads down in front. There’s even a countdown like those on old movie reels. If you’re pleased with your film, simply export it as an AVI file, and share it with friends.
