Scally’s World of Verbs supports beginning and struggling readers. It introduces Scally, a little alien who is learning English quickly, because he’s stranded in orbit around our planet. Scally gets in touch with two children down on Earth. By copying their actions on his interactive television, he learns about verbs.

The challenge in this first title in a new series is to discover which verbs (past and present tense) Scally “knows”. Children can do this in five different ways:

• Watch and Say – Scally “does” a verb, children discuss what they saw


• Click and Watch – Click a verb for Scally to “do”


• Watch and Click – Scally acts-out a verb, then children click on the word


• Watch and Write – Type the verb they saw


• Write and Watch – Think of a verb – can Scally do it?

Scally’s World of Verbs can be tailored for individuals or groups, and it’s easy to save those settings. The words Scally knows can be controlled, and you can save word files for future use. When children are ready, you can challenge them to make a sequence, in which verbs will be automatically separated by commas, with a full stop at the end to give a sentence like “Scally can run, jump, fly and yell.” Mayer-Johnson’s © Picture Communication Symbols can be displayed alongside the written verbs.

With over 100 amusing animations covering 400-plus verbs (including synonyms) and five levels of activity, this is an ideal way to develop vocabulary, word recognition, listening, spelling and keyboard skills.
