Using the iPhone and Mac as Assistive Technology

This full day workshop will consist of two parts. One part will focus on universal access to Mac OS X for people with physical, vision and speech impairments. The second part will focus on using the iPhone and iPod touch as a communication solution with Proloquo2Go.

Part One: Participants will get hands-on experience in providing full access to Mac OS X and regular creative, educational, productivity and entertainment software. Participants will be introduced briefly to the built-in Universal Access features of Mac OS X. Participants will also learn how to use the various components of the AssistiveWare Suite to let their students and clients with physical, speech and vision impairments explore the frontiers of accessibility. Special attention is given to customising keyboards and settings to meet the needs of different users and provide them full access to a variety of activities and applications ranging from games to video editing. By the end of this part of the workshop participants will have a good understanding of the available access options for Mac OS X and how to setup basic configurations.

Part Two: Proloquo2Go is the innovative new AAC system for the iPhone and iPod touch. This part of the hands-on lab based workshop is designed to help individuals gain proficiency in customising and creating with Proloquo2Go. This session will help you learn by providing modeling, guided practice and independent practice with feedback in three key domains. The first domain is focused on getting a user started and customising Proloquo2Go for a range of learners including tutorials on: appearance settings, restrictions of access settings, how to edit and add vocabulary and how to work other important options and settings. In the second domain, you will create novel vocabulary sets. In the third domain, you will learn how to train others to use, customise, and create using Proloquo2Go.
