Inclusive Learning Technologies Winter School 2006

Spectronics Winter School

The Inclusive Learning Technologies® Winter School 2006 has come and gone – and what a GREAT event it was! Feedback from our 300 delegates and presenters has been overwhelmingly positive with 75% of delegates saying they will definitely be joining us for the next Inclusive Learning Technologies® Conference – planned for 12th to 15th May 2008! Make a note in your diaries now – and we will start looking around for a bigger venue to ensure we can definitely fit you all in.

What was the Winter School about?

This conference (hosted by Spectronics) focused specifically on “inclusive learning technologies” – those technologies designed to support people with disabilities and/or learning difficulties. It included sessions looking at these technologies in the following four different interest streams:

  • People with Communication Impairments

  • People with Disabilities

  • Struggling Students*

  • Local Presenters from Australia and New Zealand

*What do we mean by “struggling students”? Here we are talking about students who are in Regular Ed settings but are struggling to keep up with the reading, writing or organisational tasks required of them. These students may be struggling because of learning difficulties. Alternatively, they could be one of the growing number of ESL (English as a Second Language) students in our schools and post-secondary institutions.

Our Keynote International Presenters

Photo of Scott Marfilius
Scott Marfilius is an Assistive/Educational Technology Consultant based in the USA. He is a teacher specialising in working with students with intellectual impairments and/or learning disabilities. For the past 14 years, he has been involved in implementing assistive technology at various levels – within integrated classrooms through to district-wide system changes. His business partner is Kelly Fonner, who was the popular keynote presenter at our Inclusive Learning Technologies® Summer School in 2004. Like Kelly, Scott has a particular skill in presenting “practical applications” of the features of many assistive technologies for students from primary school through to post-secondary settings.

Photo of Dan Herlihy
Dan Herlihy, also from the USA, is an Assistive Technology Resource Specialist and Technology Integration Specialist. He started in the special education classroom before moving on to establishing his own business – Connective Technology Solutions, Inc – providing assistive technology professional development and resources for teachers. He is also the author of the innovative “IntelliTools Extreme“ book. He will be an excellent hands-on workshop facilitator at the 2006 Winter School – allowing participants to explore programs in depth!

Other International Presenters…

Several presenters from the companies who develop technologies in the USA and UK will also be attending. Experienced trainers from the following companies have confirmed they will be attending: Mayer-Johnson (Boardmaker), Texthelp Systems, Crick Software, IntelliTools, Widgit Software, DynaVox Systems, Inclusive Technology, Laureate Learning Systems® and Spark-Space!

Local Presenters…

We have coordinated presentations by key Inclusive Learning Technology Specialists from around Australia and New Zealand. As a result, our Winter School will be very relevant to the unique needs of Australasian users of technologies to support students with disabilities and/or learning difficulties.

Will this just be a series of commercial product presentations?? ABSOLUTELY NOT!

While our Winter School will show you in detail the features of many inclusive learning technologies, it will also focus very much on helping you to understand how to APPLY these programs in your classrooms and within your disability support organisations. If you wish to know more about the exciting Winter School program, please email Heather Jones at heather@spectronicsinoz.com or phone her on (07) 3808 6833 or +61 7 3808 6833 if calling from overseas!

The Conference will be held at the Crowne Plaza in Surfers Paradise on Queensland’s Gold Coast in Australia. Let’s face it… there are worse places to spend a tax deductible week in winter!

The Conference Program

After twelve months of negotiation with international and local presenters… the Inclusive Learning Technologies® Winter School program is now finalised! We hope you will find the program content as exciting as we do. Feedback from delegates already is that they don’t know how they will decide on which session to choose!

Click here to download the conference program outline and registration forms (in PDF format) – or use the chart below to learn more about each individual session and presenter in the program.

Click on the title of any session to view a more detailed description of the session content.

Click on the name of any presenter – and a window will open giving you some more background information about that presenter.
