Ginger spelling and grammar checker – now even better!

You know that MANY students in your classroom struggle to achieve age-appropriate reading and writing skills. This then limits their ability to independently realise their full potential. Just giving these struggling students a laptop will not improve their ability to benefit from your teaching nor from their own research or written work. Adding literacy support software into the package definitely will! Literacy support software like Ginger.

Ginger is an online contextual spell checker that corrects not just spelling, but also identifies misused words and grammatical errors, suggesting the right word every time – no matter how poorly spelled or poorly constructed a sentence is! It works with sentences written in Microsoft Word, emails constructed within Microsoft Outlook and text entered online when using Internet Explorer. The latest version of Ginger has MUCH improved checking of grammatical errors. AND checking of punctuation will be added in future upgrades (available free of charge to all subscribers).

I showed this to a student (tertiary) the other day, she really liked it, but asked ‘what about Maori?’
Do you know of any assistive technology that has Maori incorporated into it?

    • Hi Rachael

Yes, Ginger is a great contextual spell and grammar checker program. While Ginger automatically corrects misused words, incorrect grammar, and spelling mistakes when writing in English, it is not currently available to support any other languages.

In relation to assistive technology supporting Maori, it may be worthwhile to contact personnel in the New Zealand Ministry of Education involved with Iwi/Māori education or special education to discuss this further.
