We appreciate that it is a requirement of many professional accreditation programs that evidence is provided verifying participation in online learning activities such as this ILT2014 Virtual Registration offering. To assist you, if you are someone who would benefit having access to a Certificate of Attendance, we have built a simple "Download your Certificate of Attendance" link. Once you have completed a session, just click on this link, fill in your name and date of participation, and you will have a formal record of the number of hours of professional development completed for each video (and associated collection of resources) that you have viewed.

Any questions or need for assistance, contact us at Spectronics on conference@spectronicsinoz.com

How good was the conference? How good are the videos? Great! But don’t just take our word for it!

ILT2014 Conference delegate feedback

Whew! Hope you have recovered from the awesome rollercoaster ride that was the #ILT2014 Inclusive Learning Technologies Conference 2014! Thank you so much for being a part of it with us!

This follow-up note is sent to share links for the conference presentations, resources and photos and to share a few cool post-ILT2014 Conference blogs published over the past two weeks. If you have blogged or shared thoughts about the conference too, please let us know and we will add links to your work as well.

We also want to remind you that you can add a Virtual Registration to your standard onsite registration any time for the next 12 months. The 27 presentations (40 full hours of video) chosen for inclusion as part of the #ILT2014 Conference Virtual Registration experience are now up online and are being watched daily by our delegates! Just visit the ILT2014 Conference Virtual Registration Page to see which presentations have been recorded.

And two more bits and pieces to share. First up, if you were a delegate at the conference, your Certificate of Attendance, complete with the number of conference hours in which you participated, will be emailed to you on Tuesday of next week. The team is working on them all today.

Lastly. A competition! Yes … another one! If you enjoyed the conference, tell us about it in a short video and be in the running to win one of five ILT2014 Conference Virtual Registrations! Read on for more details. Entries close Friday 4th July!

What did you think of the conference? Tell us. On video. And win!

Photo of a guy video-ing himself with a small video camera

We had great plans of roving the conference, video camera in hand, asking you to share your thoughts about the conference and to share your favourite takeaway messages. BUT like so many great plans, once the crazy busy runaway-freight-train-like behind-the-scenes stuff started rolling for the conference team, the videos didn't happen. Boo!

So … now it's over to you! We'd LOVE to hear your thoughts. LOVE to know what you took away from the conference. Tell us on video, and you will be in the running to win one of five ILT2014 Conference Virtual Registrations. Each valued at $375. Entries close Friday 4th July so get those cameras rolling soon!

It doesn't have to be a full production masterpiece! Perfect is the enemy of done right? But a few tips here from our in-house video guy might help.

  • If using your mobile to record, it's best not to use the front facing camera (it's poor quality)
  • Shoot in landscape mode (the long sided one)
  • Make sure you are in a well lighted area with no harsh shadows – we want to see you!
  • Consider a microphone or a quiet area – we want to hear you!

Check out our first entry. A wonderful Vlog (Video Blog) from Lisa Lehmann reflecting on the three moments that have changed her life. The third being participation in the ILT2014 Conference.

How to enter? Just post your video up onto the ILT2014 Conference Facebook Group or send the video files via Dropbox or WeTransfer etc. to conference@spectronicsinoz.com. You can even use good old snail mail and post it in to the ILT2014 Conference team at Spectronics, PO Box 88, Rochedale, Queensland 4123, Australia. But remember, entries close Friday 4th July!

Photos, photos and more photos!

Photo of people posing in the photo booth

Wow. You all rocked that photo booth … day and night! In between attending sessions, visiting exhibits and networking with like-minded attendees of course. We have posted up nearly all of the photos now. You can check them out in the photo albums on the ILT Conference Facebook Group and on the Facebook Page. Please go in there and tag yourself if you want to! Add your own images to the group albums. Feel free to download images you love. And please tell us if there are any images up there that you would prefer that we not share. We will take them down ASAP.

Virtual Registrations now live! Re-live the ILT2014 Conference presentations for the next 12 months.

All 40 hours of ILT2014 Conference videos (from 27 different presentations) are NOW live online for you to view. For viewing now and for the next 12 months!

How do you sign up for a Virtual Registration if you don't have one already? Just visit the registration page and choose the Virtual Add-on Registration button. This gives you access to a one-off discounted Virtual Rego at $195. A special offer to you as an onsite conference delegate.

Then once you have registered, simply go to the Virtual Registration Videos and Resources Page and click on the blue Login Here button. You will then be asked for your email and password sent to you after you register.

Note that your Virtual Registration can only be viewed on one computer or mobile device at any one time. If someone else attempts to log in with the same details, at the same time, the current user will be "bumped off" to make way for the new login. So, if you are planning on having more than one user viewing the videos at the same time, you may wish to add additional Virtual Registrations for your school or organisation. These will continue to be available for purchase at anytime during the next 12 months here on the Virtual Registrations page.

Three steps to stay on track http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/blog/conference-2014/three-steps-to-stay-on-track/ http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/blog/conference-2014/three-steps-to-stay-on-track/#comments Sun, 01 Jun 2014 23:14:44 +0000 http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/blog/?p=11449 Reposted with permission from www.systemsofsupport.org

“When your output exceeds your input, then your upkeep will be your downfall”. These are wise words that I heard many times early on in my career from a wise mentor that genuinely cared about my long-term success. The point is that we must have a way of refueling ourselves so that we are able to continue the journey of pouring into others. I have found that we educators, therapists, clinicians, and consultants are the worst at adhering to this principle. The enormity of our work, the long task lists, meetings upon meetings, and preparation for tomorrow, next week, and next year can cause you to be so busy that you have to be reminded to stop and smell the roses. So here’s your reminder!

Running on empty. Photo credits Sophia Winters

Jason C. and I had the incredible opportunity to speak at the Inclusive Learning Technologies Conference on the Gold Coast in Australia. I have never been to an event that was so well organised with every detail thought through and delivered with excellence. It was during this time away from the distractions of the typical day to day that I was able to do 3 things that I would like you to consider doing yourself.

Engage with challenging experts. At ILT2014, I was surrounded by incredible innovators in the fields of AT, AAC, learning strategies, research to practice, and motivation. Session after session was full of must have strategies and there was not enough time to get to everything. It is through attending events like this that you get access to emerging ideas and strategies from leaders in the field. This combination of information and inspiration gives you the energy to walk away ready to improve your practice no matter where you are. Carol Zangari has done an incredible job summarising those thought leaders in a blog post here. If you are interested in accessing the sessions, the Spectronics team is making many of the sessions available online (click here to find out how to register).

Surround yourself with like minded colleagues. Hopefully you work in a team oriented environment. The unfortunate reality is that you may not have advocates surrounding you with encouragement and new ideas. Though they may not be across the hall or the office next door, you can leverage technology to make this connection. In such a collaborative community, there are always others who are willing to help. Here are a few (there are many more) people active on social media who are in the trenches, incredible encouragers, and innovators in their work from around the globe. I recommend giving each of them a follow on twitter (@chacullen, @amandahartmann8, @anitaraftery, @martinmckay, @attipscast, @possbeth, @SP_Harmony, @ibuddha, @aaronoverington, @lindafoskey, @gailbennell, @trinaOT, @wrenasmir).

Change your location. I know in times of tight budgets, a trip to Australia is probably not going to happen (or to the US for my aussie/kiwi colleagues), but a change of location doesn’t require a plane ticket. Instead of prepping at your desk or even in your office, pick somewhere different. Go outside or change rooms. Something that is outside the norm. This might just break the monotony of the day to day and allow you to see a new solution to a familiar problem.

When the day to day of your work gets the best of you, take the steps to take care of yourself and the results will follow. If you have other ideas that work for you, post below!

ILT 2014 – A Connected AT Community http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/blog/conference-2014/ilt-2014-a-connected-at-community/ http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/blog/conference-2014/ilt-2014-a-connected-at-community/#comments Thu, 29 May 2014 05:34:49 +0000 http://www.spectronicsinoz.com/blog/?p=11401 ILT 2014 - A Connected AT Community

Reposted with permission from praacticalaac.org

Recently, I had the opportunity to share some thoughts on AAC at the Spectronics Inclusive Learning Technology (ILT) Conference, in Gold Coast, Australia. It’s hard to explain the level of enthusiasm and energy for all things AAC and AT to those who aren’t familiar with that passionate group of professionals and parents. As a newbie, I was especially impressed with the level of warmth and support provided to anyone there who reached out for information or encouragement, and the ways that the speakers helped participants come away totally re-energized.

Since it may have been a bit too far away for many of our prAACtical friends, I thought I’d share some of the websites of other keynote speakers and featured presenters I met along the way.

  • Jason Gibson and Jason Carroll (Systems of Support) – Who challenged us to set smart goals for ourselves, not just the learners we serve
  • Kevin Honeycutt – Who challenged us to share what we are doing EVEN WHEN IT ISN’T PERFECT. Don’t be a silent genius. Share what you are doing.
  • David Edyburn – Who reminded us to look to the evidence base when deciding how to proceed. Use what works.
  • Greg O’Connor – Who helped us consider using the term ‘Good Practice’ instead of ‘Best Practice,’ because the latter implies that it can’t get better. With new information, experiences, and research, it can. It needs to.
  • Kelly Fonner and Scott Marfilius – Who shared effective ways of moving pre-intentional communicators of any age along the continuum to meaningful participation and expression
  • Gail Bennell (@gailbennell) and Aaron Overington (@aaronoverington) – Who helped to disseminate conference happenings on Twitter and encouraged us to stay connect.

As Aaron mentioned, the lines between our professions and roles are sometimes blurred. In the world of AAC, that is particularly true. (It’s embarrassing to note that, occasionally, the parents know more about AAC fundamentals than the SLPs working with their children. C’mon, guys! WE are supposed to be helping THEM!) I appreciated the opportunity to connect with kindred spirits (hello, Harmony Turnbull; @SP_Harmony ) and learn more about the life of AAC practitioners from Trina Phuah (@TrinaOT), Charlene Cullen (@chacullen), Amanda Hartmann (@amandahartmann8) and others. Too many to mention. It was THAT good! Thank goodness Mic Cullen was there to document it all in his photos.

The ILT conference was a terrific opportunity for me to reach out of my SLP box and learn more about educational technology and ways that it can be used to increase the learning, achievement, independence, and creativity of people with significant communication challenges. If you haven’t stepped outside of your own field recently, I highly recommend it. We are surrounded by colleagues and families who have much to teach us.

There were many wonderful sound bites from the conference. My favorite, from Kevin Honeycutt, is a variation of one I first learned from Cristin Lind (health care practices consultant) back in 2011. I combined that with a saying from Bre Pettis (entepreneur of MakerBot fame) and Kio Stark (author of Don’t Go Back to School: A Handbook for Learning Almost Anything) in the graphic below.

Perfection is the enemy of done. Done is the engine of more.

You can catch more of the ILT 2014 buzz via their Facebook group or browse the twitterfeed (#ILT2014). Not enough resources for you? Check out this document, put together by the team at Spectronics. If it all sounds too-good-to-be-missed, and it IS, you can still register for the virtual conference and see many of the presentations online. They’ll have about 40 hours worth of presentations for you to peruse.

More of your Featured Presenters | Today meet Scott Marfilius and Kelly Fonner returning as presenters AND delegates this year!

Image of headshots of Kelly Fonner and Scott Marfilius

Today, meet two of our talented regular presenters at the Inclusive Learning Technologies Conferences – going way back to the very first conference in 2004. Kelly Fonner and Scott Marfilius are heading over to join us again from the US. BUT … this time they are attending as delegates at the conference, in addition to generously sharing their learning from the assistive technologies scene in the US. They are also members of the QIAT (Quality Indicators for Assistive Technology) Leadership team. So if you subscribe to the popular QIAT Listserve, watch out for a notification about a catch up over one lunchtime to put faces to listserve names, or to follow up from your meeting at the ILT2012 Conference.

Learn more about Kelly Fonner here.
Learn more about Scott Marfilius here.

Kelly and Scott's presentations, 5 Steps to Successful Implementation of AAC apps in Classrooms and Assistive Technology and App Supports for Demonstrating Writing Competency have been so popular with delegates selecting their sessions, we will be filming both these presentations in full to be offered to people who sign up for our NEW Virtual Registration option

A personal note to you all just in from Kelly.

"I am excited to be able to book into sessions as a delegate this year. I was anxiously awaiting the time that the program went live on the Internet to see what the offerings were from all the terrific presenters. In the past, I haven't been able to attend as a delegate – this time I can't wait to learn at the premier inclusive learning technology event! Scott and I are pulling together all of our newest information to bring to our conference presentations and we are really charged to be able to present our augmentative communication strategies that we have been using with our classroom teams that we are now applying to implementing with students who are using AAC apps within school settings.

And of course, we are saving up energy for the Black and Gold Dinner and Dance. We plan to be out there with those who are the first on the floor!"

More of your Featured Presenters | Today meet Martin Littler and Carol Allen from the UK!

Image of headshots of Martin Littler and Carol Allen alongside logos for Inclusive Technology and HelpKidzLearn

Today, meet two of our UK contingent. Both are long term friends of Spectronics. Well, so long as we don't mention the Ashes of course!

First up, meet Martin Littler. Martin's history with the assistive technology spans many years. He was there teaching in classrooms way back when the Acorn computers were at their peak in special ed. Since that time, he has actively and progressively moved with the many changes to the world of ICT in schools. For the past 16 years, he has headed up Inclusive Technology in the UK and also drives innovation at their new HelpKidzLearn site producing popular online resources and over 30 iPad apps now. He founded the British Assistive Technology Association (BATA) to promote the needs of people with disabilities and the industry which serves them. With an understanding of where assistive technology has been, where it is headed as we look to the future and the impact of many disruptive technologies along that journey, Martin is the perfect choice to deliver his Keynote Address: Assistive Technology: Nineteen-Ninety to Twenty-Twenty on the final morning of the conference.

Learn more about Martin Littler here.

Next, we introduce Carol Allen. Carol is an Advisory Teacher for North Tyneside City Learning Centre and specialises in integration of ICT and special educational needs (SEN in UK speak). If you attended the ILT2012 Conference, you may recall the video of Carol speaking to us all, played before the Closing Keynote address by Ian Bean. She and Ian have worked closely over the years on many presentations and consultations in schools. So 2014 is the year, with the valued support of Inclusive Technology, for us to bring her out to Oz for you to enjoy in person! She tells us she is very nervous about her sessions, but if we keep her plied with good coffee and chocolates she will be fine. We are onto it!

Learn more about Carol Allen here.

Carol's presentations, Technology and Autism: A Practical Approach and Literacy and Laughs! have been so popular with delegates selecting their sessions, we will be filming both these presentations in full to be offered to people who sign up for our NEW Virtual Registration option. This option also will include video of Martin Littler's Keynote.

Even if you are at the conference in person, adding on a Virtual Registration gives you access to these awesome resources supporting a full year of presentations and collaborative IT strategy planning on your return-to-base.

Twitter is going to play an active part during the ‪#‎ILT2014‬ Conference. In partnership with the innovative TweetWall Pro onscreen display of your tweets and photos. This could be fun!

If you are on Twitter and are attending the ILT2014 Conference, start by following the conference @ILT2014 and our Keynote Presenters.

Carole Zangari @CommGreenhouse
Jason Carroll @jkcarroll
Martin Littler @MartinLittler

You can also now subscribe to our list of fellow tweeters who will be onsite with you at the conference and if your Twitter name is not in there already … just let us know so that we can add you in ASAP.

If you are not already using Twitter, why not set up an account ready to use when you are with us? If you need some help with knowing where to start with Twitter, we find these two references pretty helpful.

And check out the Hashtags, Retweets, Tweetchats and More: Welcome to the Wonderful World of Twitter presentation by Trina Phuah and Harmony Turnbull at the conference too.

Image of a flyer headed up "10 Reasons to attend our conference"

There are so many conferences and workshops available. What makes this one so special? Why should you choose to commit your limited funds to joining us? Click here to download the PDF flyer outlining the TOP TEN REASONS TO CHOOSE OUR CONFERENCE!

But … if we had to identify just the TOP TWO reasons that separate us from the conference pack, first up it would be the fact that we offer a unique professional development opportunity focused exclusively on learning support and technology. A combination not available anywhere else in the Australasian/SE Asian conference calendar. Some focus on technology. Some focus on learning support or special ed intervention strategies. We cover both. In every session!

AND secondly, we make it VERY easy for you, or your team members attending the conference, to share what they have learned on their return home. Maximising the benefit of your investment in the conference. All of the conference presentation materials and supporting resources will be available online to be shared freely for TWELVE MONTHS after the conference is complete. An optional “Virtual Registration” also provides access to an additional 40 hours of video recordings from the conference for twelve months too. Great for a full year of staff development presentations and IT strategy planning on return-to-base!

We'd love to have you join us if you have not already registered. Just sing out if you have any questions at all on email conference@spectronicsinoz.com or phone (07) 3808 6833 at our Brisbane office. You'll need to call +61 7 3808 6833 if calling us from outside Australia.

If you haven't received this email just let us know on conference@spectronicsinoz.com or ring the Spectronics office in Brisbane on (07) 3808 6833, or +61 7 3808 6833 if you are calling from outside Australia, and the conference team will be happy to help you out. If you've already dived in and selected your sessions … well done!

If you haven't yet registered, there are still places left in all presentations. But some may be closing soon. Of course, the sooner you register, the better your chances will be of locking in ALL of your preferred sessions.

With apologies that this is such a long email! This always happens as the conference draws nearer and so much starts coming together for all of our participants. For our enthusiastic delegates, our awesome presenters and our valued exhibitors.

Session Selections are now open for you to lock in your personal ILT2014 Conference program! Places still available in all sessions!

Image of confirmation message on registration prompting to go to Session Selections page

Yes! Session Selections are now open. How do you go about choosing your own personalised program? It's simple. As soon as you complete your registration, you will be sent an email with instructions (and your own individual password) pointing you to an online page to make your choices. You will be able to revisit that page at any time up until the Thursday before the conference (Thursday 15th May 2014).

Please note that this is optional. Well, I'll clarify that one. If you are attending one or more of the Pre-Conference workshops, we definitely need you to nominate which one you are attending. So that we make sure we allocate rooms big enough to accommodate everyone wishing to attend each Pre-Conference workshop.

But … if you don't want to pre-select and just wish to "wing it" onsite for the other three conference days, that will be fine.

What does the program look like?

Complete Conference Overview (pdf) or Conference Schedule (pdf)

All program and presenter details are available on the Conference Program page of the conference website. But if you are one of the many people telling us that they find it handy to have a printed copy of the full conference program on hand, we also offer two downloadable PDF options for you.

More of your Keynote Presenters | Today meet The Jasons!

Image of the two Jasons surfing with quotes from their Systems of Support blog overlaid

If you attended the Inclusive Learning Technologies Conference in 2012, you may remember these two presentations by Jason Carroll and Jason Gibson.

If you didn't attend those sessions, you may better remember the overflowing room in which they were presenting the next day! Their Day Two presentations were so popular, that their session on Day Three was standing room only! With many trying to get in, but missing out. So … we HAD to bring both of them back for our ILT2014 Conference delegates.

Jason Carroll is an Instructional Technology consultant and a strong advocate for the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). He regularly posts informative posts onto the Texthelp Blog in the USA and shares these posts as a Guest Blogger on the Spectronics Blog. And, as proven at the ILT2012 Conference, is an engaging and entertaining presenter.

Learn more about Jason Carroll here.

Jason Gibson specialises in learning support interventions based on research-based strategies. Bridging the gap between research and practice for students with disabilities. His experience as a classroom teacher, consultant, and researcher drive his efforts to deliver strategies that not only work, but can also be delivered practically in today’s classroom. He and Jason Carroll regularly share their valuable insights on the Systems of Support blog expressly aimed at "supporting educator excellence through technology and strategy".

Learn more about Jason Gibson here.

Presentations by the two Jasons in the ILT2014 Conference program include the following. And note, because they have been so popular with delegates selecting their sessions, it looks like we will be filming several of these presentations in full to be offered to people who sign up for our NEW Virtual Registration option.

We are certainly working them hard for you! But we are taking them surfing in Byron Bay on the Saturday after the conference as a special reward for all of that effort! So don't feel too sorry for them. ;)

The NEW DynaVox T10 to be launched in Australia at the ILT2014 Conference | Gayle Porter onsite to discuss PODD page sets for the T10 too!

Image of the DynaVox T10 communication device with announcement of coming soon!

We are excited to be launching the NEW DynaVox T10 speech generating device in Australia during the ILT2014 Conference. More information about this device, pricing and accessories is now live on the Spectronics website! Charlene Cullen, Speech Pathologist from the Spectronics Consultancy team, will be  available to demonstrate the T10 on the Spectronics exhibit throughout the conference, in addition to presenting the following session on the first day.

Meet the DynaVox T10! The Compass app, Communication Page Sets for PODD and more!
Come along to this session to meet the newest member of the DynaVox speech generating device family, the DynaVox T10. This small, portable, lightweight tablet with Android operating system supports the DynaVox Compass software. The Compass app can also be loaded onto an iPad or Windows 8 tablet. It’s a fully customisable AAC app that uses the Picture Communication Symbols (PCS) we all know and love from other DynaVox devices and the ever-popular Boardmaker software.

Also very cool is that Gayle Porter, developer of the Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display (PODD) Communication Books, is currently working with the DynaVox team to create PODD page sets that will be available on the DynaVox T10 using DynaVox Compass software with companion iPad, iPad mini, and Windows Tablet apps. To be available as PODD 15, 15+ (expanded functions) and PODD 60 (complex syntax).

Gayle will be attending the conference on Thursday 22nd May, and will be available to answer questions about PODD and the page sets being developed for use on the T10 and other mobile devices.

Only one more week for you to book discounted Jupiters’ accommodation and free WiFi. Availability can’t be guaranteed after 16th April. Boo!

Image of a bed in a room and Jupiters Hotel with a banner across it saying 'FREE Wifi!'

We have once again negotiated special rates for accommodation onsite at the conference venue (Jupiters Hotel, Gold Coast Queensland) available only to our conference delegates. These rates start at $199 per night and are valid for occupancy on a single, twin or double basis. Making it even cheaper to stay onsite if you are sharing your room with a colleague. All of these rates will be available for 7 days prior to the conference and 7 days after the conference if you wish to extend your stay on the sunny Gold Coast.

Apart from the convenience of being right there where all of the conference events and after-hours networking are happening, you will also be given access to free WiFi 24/7. Not only on the conference floor, but in all dining areas of the hotel and back up in your room too. Saving on the standard charge of $25 per day for this service.

Visit the accommodation page of the conference website for details of how to book securing this special discounted conference rate!

NOTE: We will not be able to guarantee that rooms will be available at this price after next Wednesday 16th April. It will depend on how many rooms remain for the ILT2014 Conference block booking. So, if you are planning on staying onsite, it could be a good idea to whip in now and book using our accommodation booking instructions.

Touchscreens for display of the conference program … and more.

Image of touchscreens on mobile trolleys with logos of the Technology Core and IG3 Education companies

Because the ILT2014 Conference will be an almost entirely "paperless" event, we have been looking into ways to display the online conference program for you if you don't have access to a mobile device. Or if you just prefer a bigger display and the chance to discuss upcoming session as a group. Many thanks to two of our wonderful exhibitors, Technology Core and IG3 Education, for stepping up to help out by providing interactive LED Touchscreens on mobile stands to give you access to the live program onsite!

Oh … we will also be using some of the screens to display our ILT2014 Conference Tweet Wall being set up now by the awesome TweetWall Pro team in Brussels. More about this in our next update!
