In May, Ian visited Australia to deliver workshops at the Spectronics Inclusive Learning Technologies Conference. Ian presented a keynote address to the conference entitled ‘The Killer App‘, arguing that while our students need access to new and exciting technologies like the iPad in school, the use of these technologies can only be really effective in supporting teaching and learning where staff have time to familiarise themselves with the technology and are trained to use them well. The ‘Killer App’ for any technology we use in school is not software, it’s the people who support the student’s learning. Teachers, therapists, parents and peers are all ‘Killer Apps’. It’s not good enough to simply provide new technology for schools, training and good technical support are critical to success. Ian’s message was reported widely on Australian TV and in the press.
