Main Menu

General

  • Ensure correct installation has been chosen – Word 97 or Word 2000
  • Ensure you do not run both Read and Write with WordSmith at the same time
  • If you are editing anything in the Texthelp toolkit ensure both Read and Write and WordSmith are closed
  • If you think that the program THACCSERVER is adversely affecting your computer system (especially with Office programs) then it can be removed by running this program rw5_ws2_servicepack1.exe – however this will disable screen reading. THACCSERVER is a Microsoft Active Accessibility program and Microsoft it aware of known issues with this program and Office applications.

Spelling

No spelling suggestions are being made:

  • Ensure you have the Main.dic loaded in your main dictionary, accessed from the spelling options panel and advanced tab (accessed through Read and Write)
  • Check the phonetic map and the individual mappings, ensure any new mappings are added to the top of the phonetic map list
  • If after checking the phonetic map and adding new items you are still not getting suggestions, go to the spelling options panel and click on the suggest tab; find the word you are looking for from the list, click on it, then click on the re-suggest button at the bottom of the tab. You should then see the word you are looking for appear on the right hand side of the tab.
  • The option for phonetic suggestions from the spelling options panel is switched on. Ensure all are switched on for maximum spell checking capacity. (Accessed through Read and Write).
    Be aware of the “background spelling processes” check the little ABC icon in your system tray is green before trying to spell check a document. If it is red, it is possible if you click on a word that the error may not yet have been solved.
  • You can print the error log by double clicking on it. It is sent to Notepad and then you must print from there.

Word Prediction

  • If nothing is being predicted reload the file large.pre in the edit lists tab of the prediction options.
  • If you are getting no phonetic predictions, go to the phonetic tab in the prediction options and tick all boxes or alternatively edit the lists as appropriate, ensure however that only the phonetic spelling is listed first separated by a comma, then the correct spelling.
  • If it is not learning new text ensure that the check switch is on which can be accessed by opening the prediction panel and clicking the right mouse button over the panel. A pop-up list will appear with several options, ensure that learning is checked. Also you can ensure that the panel will or will not follow the cursor from here.

Scanning

  • Ensure the option to scan directly from the scanner and not a saved document it chosen.
  • Check the correct scanner is chosen in the scanning options, also check the method in which you want the scanned document to appear (there are 5 options to chose from).
  • Has the scanner got the latest drivers? If not download them from the manufacturer’s website.
    Recommended scanning DPI is 150-300. 300 DPI gives excellent quality however takes slightly longer to complete.

Word Wizard/ Thesaurus

  • If you see “no partial word match” message for a simple non-obscure word the program needs to be reinstalled

  • Set up multi users
  • Import/export settings
  • Select additional voices from those installed on your computer.
