How do I connect a DJ Mac Switch Interface to an iMac?
by Gerry Kennedy
There are a number of considerations you need to know to be aware of successfully connect the Don Johnston Mac Switch Interface to an Apple iMac. The iMac has a USB port (Universal Serial Bus). Previous Power PC’s and Apple Macintosh computers had an ADB port (Apple Desktop Bus) where the mouse, keyboard and other popular input devices and interfaces connected.
- In order to connect the DJ Mac Switch Interface into an Apple iMac, you will need to purchase an iMate. This is an extra adapter (available at Apple dealers) that will allow you to plug the ADB extension from the DJ Mac Switch Interface cable into a USB Port.
- Once connected, the Apple iMac then must ‘see’ the iMate. You need to download the latest beta (1.8b3 or later) drivers from Griffin Technology. The web site is http://www.griffintechnology.com
- Install the Griffin iMate drivers onto your Apple iMac and reboot.
- You will now need to set up the hardware.
- The iMac range have four (4) USB ports. The two USB ports on the monitor are powered; meaning they will ‘give’ power to devices plugged into them.
- The two USB ports on the keyboard however are ‘un-powered’, meaning that they can only be used for devices that do not require power, e.g. mouse.
- The DJ Mac Switch Interface needs to be plugged into one of the powered USB Ports on the monitor via the iMate adapter. Note: Usually, your keyboard will take up the other USB port on the monitor). Therefore if you also use an external disk drive with your iMac you will need to swap between this and the iMate with the component attached.
- Connect one or more switches into the DJ Mac Switch Interface.
- Launch your favourite switch program and choose the appropriate settings for your software by connecting a switch (or switches) into the required switch ports.
