You will need:

  • USB stick/drive (also called a Fob)

  1. Plug your USB drive into one of the USB ports on the right hand side of the device.

On the MT4 or DV4, press the grey arrow representing the pull down menu at the top of the screen

  2. Choose Setup.
    Screenshot step 2

  3. Choose Setup Menu
    Screenshot step 3

  4. Press the Backup Upgrade button
    Screenshot step 4

  5. Select DynaVox Backup
    Screenshot step 5

  6. Press OK
    Screenshot step 6

  7. A screen will appear showing the Backup folder on the storage card installed in the device. You don’t want to back up onto the storage card if the device becomes corrupted it is likely the card will need to be wiped. Therefore you need to select the box next to “Show all directories”.
    Screenshot step 7

  8. Once the cross appears in the “Show All Directories” box more options will appear in the window on the left. Select the one called UMS_FOLDER. This is your USB stick.
    Screenshot step 8

  9. Now press inside the box next to Name
    Screenshot step 9

  10. A keyboard will appear so that you can type the name under which you are going to store the backup. Give the backup a name. It’s a good idea to include the date in the name – for example this is a backup for Jane on the 04/05/06. You can’t put punctuation in the backup file name so you would write it as jane040506. Putting the date in the backup helps to distinguish it between other backups you have done

  11. Once you have typed the name, press OK in the bottom left corner. A window will appear saying “Backup in Progress”. When the Backup has
finished, another window will appear saying “Backup Complete”. Press OK to finish the process.
  12. Press OK to close the Backup and Restore window
  13. Press OK again to close the Setup Menu window and turn the device off
  14. Remove the USB stick from the device.

You can then plug the USB stick into a computer with a USB port and copy the file onto the computer’s hard drive. You will then have two copies of the backup
